Product Pick-Me-Up: Red Goddess Gloss from NYX

On days when things are dreary and you’re not exactly feeling like a ray of sunshine, a splash of color will wake you right up. Red lipstick can help cure a case of the blahs, and will have you feeling sexy too. We recently unearthed a forgotten tube of NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Plush Red ($5.50) from our archives, so we thought we’d put it on and see if it can turn a gray day into one that was a little more interesting.

This gloss is red, red, red! It’s a thick, bright concoction with a tiny hint of fuschia in it. and it tastes like cherry candy. Its consistency is certainly thicker than your everyday lip gloss since it’s very pigmented – we first put it on with the applicator like you would with regular lip gloss, but it turned out to be too much. If you want to avoid looking like a clown, just apply one dot of the gloss to your upper lip, apply another one on your lower lip, and then blend. Surprisingly, it wasn’t sticky at all despite its thick feel – but it was hard to get off. The red spread over our lips and stuck to our hands too. It took some soap and water to wash the gunk off. To avoid this predicament, just remember to put a little on. Everything in moderation is always best after all.

The color looked very vivid on lips, which can easily look garish in the daytime on pale complexions if you’re not careful. Dark complexions can pull it off better, but this gloss really shines at night. It’s shiny, but not shimmery or glittery, and it’s blue-based, so it gives a mysterious, edgy, come hither look. It’s the kind of color that will go with dark, formal dresses and black leather jackets. It’s got attitude, it’s sexy, and it’s attention-grabbing – which definitely lives up to NYX’s name, which means Goddess of the Night. If you’re feeling the blues, this lip gloss will liven up your day – or night – for sure.
