Fashion Extra: The September Issue was a surprise for Anna Wintour

It’s only a few days until the premiere of ‘The September Issue’, the much-awaited documentary that followed the US Vogue team around as they made their September magazine. To say we’re looking forward to seeing it is an understatement. Surely, much of what the film will show about what really goes on inside the fashion magazine’s offices will be a surprise to many of us. Apparently though, the film will also be a surprise to the famed Vogue editor, Anna Wintour.

As it turns out, Anna had no say in what appeared in the film whatsoever. Director R.J. Cutler explained that this was done because he wanted the movie to truly reflect life at the magazine. “We insisted on having final cut, and Anna granted us that right away. She got that immediately. She likes to say that she made suggestions and that I ended up ignoring every one of them.” The magazine editor and her team – including creative director Grace Coddington – were filmed by Cutler’s film crew while they produced the record-breaking issue, which is, to date, the largest ever put out with 840 pages. The crew was given full access to the Times Square Vogue offices, but they made sure they didn’t outstay their welcome. He explained to the New York Post newspaper: “Just because someone says to come over any time doesn’t mean you move in. It was an observational film. We weren’t trying to be flies on a wall. We wanted to get comfortable enough with Anna and her staff that they’d act as they normally would in front of us, when the cameras were rolling. “She’s extremely decisive. ‘Yes, no, yes, no,’ – that’s Anna Wintour. She knows her gut and she trusts her gut and doesn’t look back.” One of the memorable scenes in the film shows Grace complaining about how Anna can be frivolous when it came to spending publishing house Conde Nast’s money.
